Garth Risk Hallberg is the author of A Field Guide to the North American Family and was selected by Richard Bausch as one of 2008′s Best New American Voices. His short stories have been published in Glimmer Train, Canteen, and The Pinch, among others. Essays have appeared in New York Magazine, Slate , The Los Angeles Times: Jacket Copy, and various anthologies, as well as at The Millions, where he is a staff writer. A 2008 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Fiction, Garth teaches at Fordham University and Sarah Lawrence College. He’s at work on a novel and a story collection. Switzerland’s Neue Zürcher Zeitung enters the “Reading Labyrinth,” and comes out “richly rewarded.”

Not sure exactly what this review from Der Spiegel says, but I gather it’s positive.

A Field Guide to the North American Family is “a small Gesamtkunstwerk of great immediacy,” writes Friederike Albaat of Madame magazine. “A terrific social novel building interwoven narratives around the lives of two Long Island families, with cross-references to others chapters, as one might find in field guides about birds or trees.
